In the early days of my first Whole30, I was pretty sure I was doomed to eat bland and boring food forever or else make every flavorful sauce myself. I’m not someone that’s going to whip up jars and jars of condiments and sauces from scratch but the more and more labels I read, the more I learned that sugar and dairy are EVERYWHERE! Ugh! The agony! The good news? I didn’t give up! The more I researched and roamed the aisles of grocery stores, the more I realized there are compliant sauces, I just had to look for them.
Below are some of the sauces and condiments that I always have on hand during a Whole30 and have also switched out to be our normal option. I will tell you, some of these are slightly more expensive than their “normal” counterparts, but for me that’s worth it.
Sauce: Pace Salsa
What I use it for: What isn’t it good for?! I love salsa! I use it on my eggs or a salad or on taco night. Many salsa brands include sugar, but this variety doesn’t. I also really like fresh salsa and pico, but I don’t always have them on hand.
Sauce: Primal Kitchen Mayo
What I use it for: I am not a huge mayo fan, but I do like it with my tuna to make it more creamy. I have tried several times to make my own but failed repeatedly so I eventually just gave up and bought the compliant brand. This jar is pricey (almost $10) but it will go bad before I ever use it all.
Sauce: Coconut Aminos (I bought this bottle at Walmart)
What I use it for: Anywhere I’d use soy sauce!
Sauce: Mustards (regular yellow and stone ground)
What I use it for: I use regular mustard for burger night and I use the stone mustard for my homemade balsamic dressing and to add flavor into my tuna salad.
Sauce: Frank’s RedHot (my bottle is from Walmart)
What I use it for: Life!!!! We LOVE hot sauce in this house. I put it on eggs, certain grilled meats, and in my water (joke!) I love the flavor of Frank’s and probably wouldn’t survive a Whole30 without it.
Sauce: Salad Dressing (in this picture, homemade dump ranch)
What I use it for: EVERYTHING! I love this stuff (and I’m a salad dressing snob!) Salad dressing is the only sauce I regularly make myself because it saves so much money and it is SO tasty and it’s easy! I usually have some kind of vinaigrette and a ranch in the fridge and have to make them about once a week. Wanna make your own Dump Ranch? Here’s the one I use! There are also lots of options for compliant store bought options, including a line by Primal Kitchen that I’ve found at Hyvee.
Sauce: Rao’s Spaghetti Sauce (from Walmart)
What I use it for: Any Italian dish. My favorite? Meatballs over spaghetti squash! I’ve also bought an Aldi brand that was also compliant- just gotta read for sugar!
See? You can have almost every type sauce you love if you just work a little bit to find it! I know there are some brands with compliant ketchup and BBQ sauce, but I haven’t tried them yet. Maybe over the summer when we fire up the grill at our new house, yes?
Happy cooking! xo
